Jorogumo (ie; Whore Spider)
Illustrated by Gojin Ishihara
The Jorogumo is a type of Yokai (a supernatural creature of Japanese folklore) that is essentially a spider who transforms into a seductive woman. The story was popular throughout the Edo Period (1603 - 1867) when it was believed that the Yokai enticed men by playing a Biwa (short necked Lute), to then proceed to entangle him in her web and devour him. This could only happen after it’s 400th birthday, when it gains it’s magical powers. Strangely enough, some areas of Japan praised the creature as a goddess of protection, believing that it saved many people from drowning around Sendai (West Coast of Japan).
